The common wording
Our records show an unpaid toll. Pay the balance by [date] to avoid late fees, collection action, or a driver’s-license penalty. Use [link] to settle now.
Real names, amounts, links, and notice numbers vary. A correct road name or area code does not prove the sender is real.
What makes it dangerous
- The amount is small enough to pay without thinking.
- The message threatens a much larger penalty.
- It pushes a link instead of letting you check an account you already know.
- The page may copy official colors and logos while stealing card and identity details.
What to do
- Do not open the text link.
- If you use a toll account, open the saved app or type the road operator’s known website yourself.
- If you do not recognize a toll, call the operator using a number you find independently.
- Delete and report the text as junk.
